Communications and digital minister Fahmi Fadzil said there were many scams taking place on the popular mobile app of late.

“We hope to contact Telegram to discuss a few things on the matter,” he told reporters after attending MCA’s Chinese New Year open house here.

Fahmi also advised the public to remain vigilant for scams during the festive period and advised victims to call the National Scam Response Centre immediately.

“This way we can block any money from going through,” he said.

Fahmi also revealed that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had successfully blocked 1.8 billion scam calls between 2017 and 2022.

He added that as many as 300 million scam messages through SMS had also been blocked since 2018.

Fahmi also advised youths to verify offers made on social media for jobs before applying.

“Don’t fall for scams. If an offer is too good to be true, it probably is,” he said.

Recently, many people were reported to be trapped overseas and forced to work for scam syndicates after taking up lucrative job offers.
