Umno amends constitution to tackle party hopping

The amendment was made in order to align the party's constitution with that of the Anti-Party Hopping Act that was passed by Parliament last year.

Another amendment passed today was for every Umno division information head to be made a representative in the Umno general assembly every year.
KUALA LUMPUR:
The special Umno general assembly today approved two amendments to the party’s constitution, including one which is related to the issue of party hopping.

Under the amendment concerned, any member who wins in an election but then leaves the party would automatically lose their membership. The same would apply for anyone who contests as an independent or under another party in any election.

The first amendment was made in order to align the party’s constitution with that of the Anti-Party Hopping Act that had been passed by Parliament last year.

The second amendment approved was for every Umno division’s information head to be among those who are automatically made a representative in the Umno general assembly every year.

The approval of the two amendments was confirmed by Umno permanent chairman Badruddin Amiruldin who stated that both amendments were passed after a majority of the delegates in attendance voted in favour.

Earlier, Umno vice-president Khaled Nordin presented the amendments and said it was needed to ensure that the provisions in the party are up-to-date and is in line with current provisions and national laws.
