PETALING JAYA:
A former consultant psychiatrist charged with insulting the modesty of a former patient, a rape victim, has been acquitted without his defence being called.

In a brief oral decision, magistrate Nurshahira Abdul Salim said the prosecution had failed to prove its case against Dr Gurdeep Singh Narain Singh.

Gurdeep was charged in early 2020 with uttering offensive words to a 29-year-old former female patient at Thomson Hospital in Kota Damansara at about 4.30pm on Feb 12, 2019.

He was charged under Section 509 of the Penal Code, which prescribes a jail term of up to five years or a fine or both upon conviction.

Nine prosecution witnesses, including the woman, gave evidence.

Haaziq Pillay represented Gurdeep, while deputy public prosecutor Farhana Fuad conducted the prosecution.

Lawyer Francis Pereira, who held a watching brief for the woman, hoped the prosecution will file an appeal.
