The pact was jointly signed by Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Anwar Ibrahim, Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chairman Abang Johari Openg, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) chairman Hajiji Noor, and Warisan president Shafie Apdal.
It was also signed by the secretaries-general of the respective parties.
At a press conference, Anwar maintained that the focus of the agreement was not about position or riches, but on good governance and spurring economic growth.
“Our central focus will be on generating economic growth not only in the peninsula but also in Sabah and Sarawak,” he said.
Meanwhile, Zahid said the agreement safeguarded the rights enshrined under the Federal Constitution, including on Islam, the Malay language, the position of the Malays, as well as the Malay rulers.
Hajiji, who is also Sabah chief minister, added that the agreement gave Sabahans hope, especially in terms of its economy and development.
Separately, Shafie was optimistic that the MoU would ensure political stability in Malaysia, which would in turn bring about economic stability.
