Search continues for 51 trapped after landslide near Genting Highlands

Two people have died and three others were injured.

PETALING JAYA:
Fifty-one people are feared to be trapped after a landslide occurred at a camping site near Genting Highlands early this morning.

According to a Facebook post by the Selangor fire and rescue department, 79 people are believed to have been camping at the site located near an organic farm in Batang Kali.

As of 7am, the authorities have rescued 23 of them.

Two people, including a child, have died and three others were injured.

Search and rescue efforts are under way.

In a statement, Selangor fire and rescue chief Norazam Khamis said they were alerted to the incident at 2.24am and arrived at the site half an hour later.

Firemen from the Kuala Kubu Bharu, Rawang, Genting Highlands, Sentosa, Ampang, Pandan, Kota Anggerik, Kajang and Andalas stations have been deployed to assist in the rescue operations.

Personnel from the fire and rescue department’s elite Special Tactical Operation and Rescue Team of Malaysia (STORM) and K9 units are also on site.

Local government development minister Nga Kor Ming and natural resources, environment and climate change minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad were heading to the site.
