The Melaka state assembly has 28 seats, with 21 held by Barisan Nasional, five by PH and two by PN. The PN elected representatives will remain in the opposition.
“We should now include PH and PN assemblymen in government committee meetings, give equal allocations to assemblymen, as well as create a special session in the state assembly to allow backbenchers to highlight important or urgent issues,” said DAP’s Kerk in a statement.
“I think that if opposition assemblymen are given a proper platform and enough space, the rights of those who are represented by these assemblymen will be taken care of — providing checks and balances for our administration.
“Our struggle to strengthen the role of opposition assemblymen started a long time ago. It is not meant to benefit PH or any political party. Instead, it is meant to create a more stable and balanced democratic system.”
Apart from Kerk and Melaka PH chairman Adly Zahari, who is the Bukit Katil assemblyman, the other three PH representatives in the Melaka state assembly are Bandar Hilir assemblyman Leng Chau Yen; Kota Laksamana assemblyman Low Chee Leong; and Kesidang assemblyman Seah Shoo Chin.
On Tuesday, Adly announced that PH would be forming a unity government with BN in the state after the tie-up between the two coalitions at the federal level.
