MELAKA:
The Melaka state government has asked Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to review the decision to put on hold flood mitigation projects costing a total of RM7 billion.

Chief minister Sulaiman Ali said if the projects were delayed or reinvestigated, it would affect efforts to mitigate the flood problems in the state.

“In Melaka, there are four or five flood mitigation projects that have started since September and some were implemented through direct negotiations while others were through the tender process.

“These projects need to be completed immediately,” he told reporters after the opening of Sekolah Rendah Agama JAIM Seri Duyong by Melaka governor Ali Rustam here.

Sulaiman said Melaka received approval for an allocation amounting to RM932 million to implement the projects to solve the flood woes in high-risk areas.

He said among the projects that had been approved were those in Krubong, Sungai Duyong, Alor Gajah, Jasin and Merlimau.

On Tuesday, Anwar ordered a review of several flood mitigation projects worth RM7 billion as they were awarded through direct negotiations instead of going through a tender process.

Meanwhile, Sulaiman said the Melaka state government had implemented 2,724 projects or development programmes involving allocations amounting to RM353 million from 2020 until now.
