KAJANG:
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says he will test his majority in Parliament through a vote of confidence.

At a press conference, Anwar said the vote of confidence is the first item on the agenda when Parliament convenes on Dec 19.

“In another month or so, we will table a revised budget,” he said.

Earlier today, Istana Negara said that following discussions with the Malay rulers this morning, the King had consented to the Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman’s appointment as prime minister.

The King had initially asked PH and Perikatan Nasional to form a unity government after the general election ended in a hung Parliament, but PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin said he turned this down as PN could not work with PH.

At a press conference held at PN’s headquarters, Muhyiddin insisted that he commanded the majority support of MPs to lead the government.

Calling on Anwar to prove that he had the support of the majority of MPs to become the prime minister, Muhyiddin said he had 115 statutory declarations (SD) from MPs backing him for the top post.

“Muhyiddin has thrown a challenge to test our strength. He does not need to do that,” said Anwar.

“I have asked PH to propose a vote of confidence on the first day of Parliament.”

Although Muhyiddin turned down the chance to work with Anwar, the latter said it wasn’t too late for the two former allies to work together once again.

“I hope PN considers (joining Anwar’s government), if they are ready to strengthen an already strong government.”
