PKR’s Amirudin ousts Azmin Ali from Gombak stronghold

The Selangor PKR chief and menteri besar toppled Azmin Ali by a majority of 12,729 votes.

Amirudin Shari and Azmin Ali were seen as being closely linked before the latter defected to Bersatu in 2020.
PETALING JAYA:
Amirudin Shari, the Selangor menteri besar, has won Azmin Ali’s stronghold of Gombak, defeating the former PKR deputy president by a majority of 12,729 votes.

Azmin polled 59,538 votes, while Megat Zulkarnain Omardin of Barisan Nasional secured 30,723 votes, Aziz Jamaludin Mhd Tahir of Pejuang garnered 2,223 votes while Zulkifli Ahmad obtained 675.

The turnout was recorded at 80% out of 206,744 voters.

Azmin was a three-term MP for Gombak. In the May 2018 general election, he won with a 48,721 vote majority. However, in February 2020, he led 10 MPs out of PKR to support Bersatu, in what has come to be known as the Sheraton Move.

Amirudin, also the Selangor PKR chief, used to be closely linked to Azmin prior to his departure from PKR.

The defection, and Bersatu’s decision to leave Pakatan Harapan, caused the collapse of the PH government after 22 months in power.
