PETALING JAYA:
Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has lost in Langkawi, in the second parliamentary election defeat of his political career.

He failed to secure re-election to the Langkawi seat, losing to Perikatan Nasional’s Suhaimi Abdullah, who won with a 13,518-vote majority.

Mahathir, who sought a second term as Langkawi MP, was earlier seen trailing Barisan Nasional candidate Armishah Siraj.

However, as more ballots came in, it appeared the elder statesman had lost for the first time since 1969, when he was defeated by Yusof Rawa of PAS in the Kota Setar constituency.

Mahathir obtained a total of 4,566 votes, compared to Suhaimi’s 25,463 votes.

BN’s Armishah came second at 11,945 votes, while PH’s Zabidi Yahya garnered 5,417 in third place. Independent candidate Abd Kadir obtained 89.

Turnout was recorded at 71% out of 66,777 voters.
