Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan said Isham’s appointment took effect immediately.

“I hereby confirm that in accordance with Clause 9.6 of the party’s constitution, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has appointed Isham as the party’s information chief effective from today, following Shahril’s resignation,” he said on Twitter.

Isham was previously the Selangor Barisan Nasional information chief before being axed in June as the post was not provided for in the coalition’s constitution.

Meanwhile, Isham said he was informed of his appointment by Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan and Ahmad.

“I would like to thank the party for the appointment and having faith in me,” he said in a Facebook post.

He also said there was a need for a renewal in the party from within and it was a cause he would not shy away from.

“I accept the responsibility that has been entrusted to me.”
