Earlier today, it was claimed that Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had called off the party’s Supreme Council meeting to “rush over” to Anwar’s house for talks on forming the next government.
Media crews waited outside Anwar’s home in Sungai Long, near Kajang, in anticipation of Zahid’s rumoured visit. However, he did not turn up.
Anwar dismissed talk about the supposed meeting with Zahid, Bernama reported.
In the general election yesterday, none of the three political coalitions won enough seats to form a government on its own.
PH has the highest number of seats with 82 (including Muda’s sole seat), followed by Perikatan Nasional (73), BN (30), Gabungan Parti Sarawak (22) and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (6).
The coalitions need 112 seats for a simple majority. There are 222 seats in the Dewan Rakyat.
Last night, Anwar had claimed he had sufficient support to form a government, but would not reveal which parties had lent their support. He reiterated the claim tonight when met by reporters at his residence.
“I am adamant that we have the majority and we got the support. I am confident that we would be given the opportunity to govern the country,” he was quoted as saying. He again declined to go into detail.
“We obtained the majority since last night. Let the relevant parties announce who they are in the near future. Be it tonight or tomorrow.”
Earlier today, leaders of Perikatan Nasional had discussions with GPS and GRS members about a coalition government. GPS had claimed earlier that it had agreed to a pact with PN, BN and GRS to form the next government. The claim was later denied by Zahid.
