Nearly 3,000 flood victims placed in relief centres

The evacuees are from Johor, Kelantan, Selangor, Melaka, Penang and Perak.

PETALING JAYA:
The number of flood victims in the peninsula has increased, with nearly 3,000 evacuated in six states as of 10am today.

A total of 2,940 victims have been evacuated in Johor, Kelantan, Selangor, Melaka, Penang and Perak, Berita Harian reported, citing the welfare department’s flood info portal.

Thirty-one temporary relief centres have been opened for the evacuees, from 914 families.

Kelantan had the highest number of victims with 1,969 evacuated, followed by Johor (319), Perak (289), Selangor (182), Penang (139) and Melaka (42).

The National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) said rising waters has seen two rivers in Sarawak – Sungai Long Jegan and Sungai Marudi in Miri – exceed their dangerous levels as of 9am.

Also reaching dangerous levels were Sungai Skudai in Johor, Sungai Rantau Panjang in Kelantan, as well as parts of Sungai Melaka.
