Citing the arrests of several DAP members in 2019 over alleged links to the now-defunct Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), Muhyiddin said DAP had urged him to remove LTTE from the home ministry’s list of terror organisations.
In a Facebook post, the then home minister said he had been briefed by the police that there were former LTTE members who had fled from Sri Lanka to Malaysia, but were still a threat to the nation’s security.
“I was adamant that we could not remove LTTE from the list of terror groups arbitrarily,” he said.
“DAP was unhappy with my firm stand. They wanted to intervene in the management of national security without considering its implications on the country and the people.
“I refused to give in. But, in the end, I was surprised when then attorney-general Tommy Thomas dropped the charges against those allegedly linked to LTTE, including the DAP members.
“They have compromised national security for their narrow political interests. This was an utterly irresponsible act,” he said, adding that DAP had no standing to talk about national peace or anti-terrorism efforts
He was responding to Perak DAP chief Nga Kor Ming saying Malaysia would become like Afghanistan should PN come to power, in warning about a Taliban type of government.
Muhyiddin also accused Lim Guan Eng of sabotaging the Bumiputera agenda when he was the finance minister by asking for the closure of Ekuiti Nasional Berhad (Ekuinas), a private equity fund management company set up by Putrajaya.
The Bersatu president claimed Lim had asked then prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to shut down Ekuinas and redirect the RM2.4 billion allocated to the firm back to the finance ministry.
“Azmin Ali, the economic affairs minister at the time, protested against this. But because of his failed attempt to shut down Ekuinas, during Budget 2020, Lim set aside a token allocation of RM100 for Ekuinas.
“This is a form of sabotage against the Bumiputera agenda. So don’t ask me again why my comrades and I left PH,” said Muhyiddin in a separate post.
