JOHOR BAHRU:
The Johor government aims to build 21,139 affordable houses over the next five years, state executive councillor Jafni Md Shukor said.

He said 2,200 units would be completed by the end of next month, making a total of 2,400 units for this year. Balloting and handing over of keys were already settled for the completed lots, he added.

Jafni, who heads the housing and local government committee, said the state government would continue working with housing developers to achieve the five-year goal.

It held meetings with 57 developers recently, he said during a media conference after a handover ceremony for the Seri Aman 1 Larkin Apartments here today, in the presence of Johor menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi.

Jafni said the state housing policy also required developers to build affordable housing, but ensured they would not be burdened by the requirement.

“Developers are allowed to build expensive homes. It is up to them whether they want to price them from RM400,000 to RM1 million. But it is their responsibility to allocate 40% for affordable housing,” he said.

The state government has improved its online application system. Johorians who do not own houses or land only need to prepare five documents, instead of the 17 required previously.
