PETALING JAYA:
Young Syefura Othman, who was named yesterday as DAP’s candidate for the Bentong parliamentary seat, said she was a little disappointed that its former MP had decided to contest against her as an independent.

The former Ketari assemblyman said she was hoping that she could work with Wong Tack to retain the seat in the 15th general election (GE15).

“As he was the former Bentong representative, I would have wanted to learn from him.

“I respect him as a friend and a fellow comrade,” she told FMT.

Young Syefura, who is also known as Rara, said she respected Wong’s decision to defend the seat as an independent, “although I had somewhat expected that this would happen”.

Wong declared last evening that he would stand in Bentong as an independent after being dropped as a candidate. He claimed DAP had informed him that he would not fit into the party’s “grand strategy” for GE15.

He won the seat in GE14 after beating then MCA president Liow Tiong Lai by more than 2,000 votes.

Young Syefura said her biggest challenge would be to deal with the possible split votes and support now that Wong had decided to defend the seat.

“But I believe my work and track record as a Ketari assemblyman would convince the voters to back me and Pakatan Harapan,” she said.

She also said she would go to the ground to ensure that voters knew she was representing PH, and that Wong was no longer DAP’s candidate.
