Wan Azizah to contest in Bandar Tun Razak in GE15, says source

The source says the decision was made last week and the choice was between the former deputy prime minister or PH chairman Anwar Ibrahim.

An announcement on former deputy prime minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail’s candidacy is expected to be made on Friday.
PETALING JAYA:
Former deputy prime minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail will be contesting the Bandar Tun Razak seat in the upcoming general election (GE15).

A source from PKR’s Bandar Tun Razak division told FMT the matter was confirmed last week.

“It was either her or Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Anwar Ibrahim,” said the source.

“Since Anwar would be contesting in Tambun, (it was decided) Wan Azizah would contest here.”

The decision is expected to be announced on Friday when PKR unveils its full list of candidates for GE15.

“As of now, the list of candidates is 98% complete,” said the source.

Kamarudin Jaffar won the Bandar Tun Razak seat in GE14 when he was with PKR.

However, he was among the 11 PKR MPs who shifted their allegiance to Bersatu in February 2020, which saw the collapse of the ruling PH coalition.

Prior to that, Khalid Ibrahim won the Bandar Tun Razak seat for PKR in both GE12 and GE13. He was appointed Selangor menteri besar after GE12 in 2008 but was fired by PKR in 2014 after refusing to hand over the menteri besar post to Wan Azizah.

Wan Azizah, who is the incumbent in Pandan, was also the PH chairman and PKR president before stepping aside for her husband, Anwar.

It was previously reported that PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli wants to contest Pandan in GE15, the seat which he first won in GE13 when he made his parliamentary debut.
