PETALING JAYA:
Khairy Jamaluddin announced today that he is giving way for Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan to stand in Rembau in the next general election (GE15).

As soon as he made this announcement at the Rembau Umno division delegates’ meeting today, Mohamad, who is better known as Tok Mat, said the party would look for a suitable seat for the caretaker health minister to contest in GE15.

“That’s the family spirit in Rembau; we are ‘beradat’ (civilised).

“Alhamdulillah, we will make sure that the election machinery here is further improved and there will be no more Rembau seat issues,” Bernama reported Mohamad, who is also Rembau Umno division chief, as saying.

He praised Khairy as a young leader of calibre who could serve the country well. As such, Umno did not want him to “disappear” just like that, he added.

“We are trying to find a suitable constituency for him to contest,” he told reporters after the meeting.

Regarding today’s delegates’ meeting, Mohamad, who is also Barisan Nasional deputy chairman, said Umno needed to focus on some areas that suffered narrow defeats at the last general election in 2018.

“We are not talking about any seat targets here. We must win more than 112 seats in GE15 in order to form the government.

“If possible, we would like to win more seats than this. The areas that we lost narrowly need to be given more focus by the leadership,” he said.
