A source told FMT that Fadzilah is Bersatu’s choice to win the support of young voters in the constituency, which was previously held by PKR’s Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
Fadzilah, who is Bersatu’s Srikandi Muda chief, is seen as the most suitable candidate to challenge Nik Nazmi.
The source said this is in view of PKR’s declining popularity as seen in the Melaka and Johor state elections.
“Her (Fadzilah) task is to win the hearts of young voters, who make up the majority in the urban areas in Setiawangsa,” the source said.
“She will provide stiff competition to the (other) candidates.”
The source said Fadzilah’s experience as a welfare activist with an NGO before entering politics, as well as being a civil law practitioner, highlighted her capabilities.
However, the source acknowledged that the final decision on candidates lies with Perikatan Nasional’s top leadership.
Nik Nazmi, a PKR vice-president, won the Setiawangsa seat in GE14 after defeating Barisan Nasional’s Zulhasnan Rafique with a 14,372-vote majority.
BN held the seat for three terms before Nik Nazmi’s victory in GE14.
