PETALING JAYA:
Residents in flood-prone areas will be able to move into temporary evacuation centres two days before the floods are predicted to happen.

As such, there will be no need to use rescue boats to save flood victims, said federal territories minister Shahidan Kassim in a written parliamentary reply to Fong Kui Lun (PH-Bukit Bintang).

Shahidan said Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has increased its level of preparedness to keep up with climate change and the unpredictability of the flood occurrences.

He said residents staying at evacuation centres will be allowed to stay on for two extra days after the floods have receded so that their homes can be checked to ensure they are safe.

He said similar procedures have been carried out by the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) for states where floods occur often such as Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Johor, Sabah, and Sarawak.

Shahidan said DBKL has identified 16 community and sports halls, 15 DBKL halls and 21 schools in Kuala Lumpur that can accommodate up to 11,750 people during the floods.
