Anwar wants Dewan Rakyat to discuss rising prices, plummeting ringgit

The PKR president has submitted a motion for this issue to be prioritised when the lower house reconvenes on Monday.

The exponential rise in the prices of goods and the fall of the ringgit will affect the people in the short- and long-term, says opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.
PETALING JAYA:
Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim wants the Dewan Rakyat to prioritise discussing the rising prices of goods and the declining ringgit, as well as how to mitigate its impact on the people.

The PKR president said he had submitted a motion for these issues to be prioritised for debates when the lower house convenes on Monday.

“This matter needs to be expedited because the exponential rise in prices of goods and the fall of the value of the ringgit will affect the people, whether in the short- or long-term.

“I hope the Dewan Rakyat Speaker (Azhar Harun) would take this motion into consideration,” the Pakatan Harapan chairman said in a Facebook post.

The Dewan Rakyat Standing Orders state that any motion to raise an urgent matter for debate requires that the issue is of public interest, involves a specific matter, and is urgent.

Anwar contended that the issue of the rise in costs and plummeting ringgit fulfilled all three criteria.

The Port Dickson MP also said these two “crises” would deal a heavy blow to Malaysians who were only just recovering from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and ensuing lockdowns.
