KUALA LUMPUR:
Two new senators took their oath of office before Dewan Negara president Rais Yatim.

They are Social Security Organisation board chairman Dr Haniffa Abdullah and Wanita Umno exco member Ros Suryati Alang.

The office of the Dewan Negara president, in a statement, said Haniffa and Ros Suryati were appointed as senators by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for a three-year term from Sept 20, 2022 to Sept 19, 2025.

Haniffa, who graduated from University of Madras, India, had served as a medical officer at Hospital Klang and Hospital Sabak Bernam. He is also the founder and executive chairman of the Foreign Workers Medical Examination Monitoring Agency (Fomema) Sdn Bhd.

“Meanwhile, Ros Suryati is a successful entrepreneur and had received the Entrepreneur Icon award 2017,” the statement read.

In his speech, Rais called on all senators to provide service on the ground through the non-governmental organisations (NGOs) they represented.

He hoped that all senators would play an active role, especially when Dewan Negara was currently going through a transformation phase.

“I hope that you will all fully use your expertise as outlined in Article 45 of the Federal Constitution to live up to your roles,” he said.
