RM16.4mil set aside for northeast monsoon relief measures

State disaster management committees will receive RM8 million for distribution to 160 districts.

KOTA BHARU:
The government has allocated more than RM16.4 million as disaster aid to face possibilities of flooding and evacuation of victims, especially in high-risk areas, during the northeast monsoon period.

National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) deputy director-general (operations) Meor Ismail Meor Akim said RM8 million will go to the state disaster management committees to be distributed to 160 districts.

Another RM1.08 million will be channelled to eight agencies and state disaster management committee secretariats such as the police, fire and rescue department and social welfare department.

A total of almost RM2.6 million will also be utilised for Phase 1 maintenance and improvement of temporary relief centres nationwide, Meor Ismail told reporters after attending an eastern zone disaster control centre workshop here.

He added that 320 fibreglass boats as well as safety jackets, involving an allocation of RM4.8 million, had been distributed in preparation for the floods.
