Kasthuri claimed that Rina was “doing it for the likes” when responding to Rosyam Nor’s antics.
“This isn’t what women empowerment is about,” the Batu Kawan MP said when contacted.
Earlier today, Rina released a video on her social media account in which she appeared to reprimand Rosyam for saying that women were tardy and should get up when promoting an event for the ministry.
In her video, Rina said she had ticked off the actor and told him not to belittle women.
Yesterday, former deputy women, family and community development minister Hannah Yeoh called for Rina’s sacking over the promotional video which also saw Rosyam saying he would beat up women who wanted to meet him to wake them up.
Yeoh went on to question how scripts that made fun of women were approved by Rina or the ministry, noting that Rina and officers of Yayasan Kebajikan Negara just stood by and smiled as insults were levelled at women in the TikTok video featuring Rosyam.
Former law minister Azalina Othman Said also took a swipe at Rina, saying the latter should just remove the word “women” from the ministry’s name and change it to “family development ministry”.
She also said all the ministry’s efforts in opposing violence against women had gone down the drain.
Kasthuri went on to say that Rina’s attempt to be TikTok savvy at the expense of women was the very reason why women were still treated as commodities, second class citizens and unable to think for themselves.
She also said Rina’s publicity stunts showed that the latter lacked knowledge and substance as well as political will.
“When a minister behaves this way, she is sending a message that it is acceptable for men to make fun and reduce women to mere objects.”
Meanwhile, when contacted, Yeoh expressed shock and dismay.
“Is she for real? I just feel too sad for us Malaysians that we have someone like that in the Cabinet. I am speechless.”
