Prove DAP sparked fears over CM’s post, MCA told

Chief minister Chow Kon Yeow expresses disbelief over claim that a non-Chinese will helm the state if BN wins.

GEORGE TOWN:
MCA has been told to prove that DAP has urged the Chinese to vote for them to ensure the Penang chief minister’s post will continue to be held by a Chinese.

Expressing incredulity over the allegation, Penang DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow demanded that state MCA chief Tan Teik Cheng provide evidence to back his claim.

“Who in DAP said it? Ask him (Tan) to say who,” Chow said when met on the sidelines of the World Congress on Innovation and Technology (WCIT) here today.

On Saturday, Tan claimed that DAP was carrying out a “vicious and irresponsible” scheme to lure Chinese voters to vote for the party by stoking fears that the chief minister’s post would go to a non-Chinese.

He said DAP was trying to make it seem that if Barisan Nasional (BN) were to take over Penang, the chief minister would be replaced by someone from Umno.

All of Penang’s chief ministers have been Chinese.

Earlier, Chow, the current chief minister, delivered a keynote address at the 26th WCIT at the Setia Spice Convention Centre, where 4,000 delegates and 200 speakers will be meeting over the next three days.

Malaysia last hosted the global event in 2008. It was supposed to be held in 2020 but was postponed to this year because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The event was launched by Penang governor Fuzi Razak, and attended by Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Cabinet ministers.
