BANGKOK:
The remains of a man who died in hospital near the Thai-Myanmar border in May has been confirmed to be that of Malaysian Goi Zhen Feng, believed to be a victim of a job fraud syndicate.

His identity was confirmed through DNA tests of a sample from his father, Goi Chee Kong.

Perak state assemblyman Sim Chon Siang, who assisted Goi in Bangkok, said the family will hold a cremation ceremony and Zhen Feng’s ashes will be brought home to the family residence in Ipoh later this week.

Goi and his wife had come to Bangkok on Aug 30 to find their missing son who was said to be ill and receiving treatment in Mae Sot.

However, hospital authorities told him that Zhen Feng, his eldest son, had died on May 11 and had been buried in a cemetery in Chonburi province under the name “Mun Jun Hong”.

The parents were informed by the doctor that Zhen Feng had been abused before being sent to the hospital under a false name.

The family had to raise funds to pay off the hospital bill of about RM40,000 before they could obtain a death certificate to conduct a DNA test, cremate the body and bring the victim’s ashes back to Ipoh.

Zhen Feng, a final year student at a teacher-training institute went to Bangkok on holiday in January. His family filed a missing person’s report when he failed to return for his mother’s birthday in February.
