BANGKOK:
The initial design for the road alignment connecting the border checkpoints at Bukit Kayu Hitam and Sadao in Thailand is expected to be completed by November.

Works minister Fadillah Yusof said the public works department (JKR) is carrying out preliminary work on the site, which includes surveys, site investigation work and traffic studies.

The next meeting of the Malaysia-Thailand expert working group in December was expected to further discuss the design.

This road alignment is among infrastructure projects planned for the Malaysia-Thailand border, which is expected to boost trade as almost 50% of Malaysia-Thailand bilateral trade is concentrated there.

Malaysia and Thailand hope to achieve a target of achieving US$30 billion (RM132 billion) in bilateral trade by 2025.

Fadillah said Thailand had agreed on a Malaysian design for a bridge linking Rantau Panjang and Sungai Golok, while a proposal for the Pengkalan Kubor-Tak Bai Bridge would be submitted to the Cabinet.
