
Former 1MDB CEO Arul Kanda Kandasamy said he received a complaint from then auditor-general Ambrin Buang during a meeting in December 2015.
“Some people in 1MDB were entirely suppressing information and documents,” he admitted, when cross-examined by lawyer Shafee Abdullah, representing former prime minister Najib Razak.
Arul Kanda, who joined the troubled company on Jan 5, 2015, said then 1MDB chief financial officer Azmi Tahir was singled out.
Shafee: Who had the documents?
Arul Kanda: Azmi Tahir.
Shafee: Was there any suppression by the 1MDB board?
Arul Kanda: None that I know of.
Arul Kanda also told the court a special task force comprising the police and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) raided the 1MDB office in July 2015 and seized several documents and computer hard drives.
In early 2015, the Najib-led Cabinet had ordered the national audit department to conduct a financial audit on the company. This was carried out between March 9, 2015 and March 4, 2016.
Najib is standing trial for alleged abuse of power as the then prime minister and finance minister in February 2016 to obtain immunity from legal action and causing amendments to the finalised 1MDB audit report
This report was then submitted to Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee on March 4 and 7.
On June 24, the court allowed the prosecution’s application to examine Arul Kanda, who is charged with abetting Najib. He remains a co-accused.
The hearing before judge Zaini Mazlan was adjourned to Sept 2.
