Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat issued a warrant of committal to send Najib to prison effective today since there was no more avenue for appeal.
Despite the drizzle, around 300 supporters waited patiently near the exit lane behind the building to wave goodbye to Najib – who is believed to be heading to the Kajang prison to serve his sentence.
However, he left the Palace of Justice via the entry lane on the other side of the courthouse.
Najib was appealing his 2020 High Court conviction on seven charges brought against him for abuse of power, money laundering and criminal breach of trust over SRC International funds amounting to RM42 million, for which he was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment and a RM210 million fine, or in default, an additional jail term of five years.
His conviction was upheld by the Court of Appeal in December 2021.
