Rafizi to reveal politician said to have embezzled LCS funds

He says he has evidence to back his claims and wants to ensure that 'big sharks' involved do not get away.

PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli says he doesn’t want the major culprits to escape punitive action.
PETALING JAYA:
PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli has said he will reveal the identity of a politician who he claims to be involved in misappropriating funds meant for the navy’s littoral combat ship (LCS) project.

In a Facebook post, Rafizi said he will reveal the politician’s identity tomorrow, adding that he has evidence to back his claims.

“I have decided to name the politician to prevent the big ‘sharks’ from escaping (punitive action) while smaller fish are made scapegoats,” said Rafizi.

So far, former Boustead Naval Shipyard (BNS) managing director Ahmad Ramli Mohd Nor has been charged with three counts of criminal breach of trust involving RM21.08 million linked to the navy project.

Ramli, a former navy chief, was charged at the Kuala Lumpur sessions court on Aug 16 with fraudulently approving three payments amounting to RM21.08 million to three different firms without the approval of the BNS board.

BNS was awarded a contract to build six frigates in the troubled RM9 billion LCS project, which has come under parliamentary scrutiny over costs and delays in construction.

The first ship was launched in 2017 and scheduled for delivery in 2019, with the rest at six-month intervals. However, none have been completed or delivered.

The project was plunged into controversy earlier this month after the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) questioned management and contract decisions made by two senior management officials.

Ramli was also the chairman of the LCS steering committee.

During its probe, PAC had summoned top officials like former deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, defence minister Hishammuddin Hussein, defence ministry secretary-general Muez Abd Aziz, former auditor-general Ambrin Buang, current navy chief Reza Sany as well as BNS’ CEO and chief operating officer.
