Kuala Kangsar district police chief Omar Bakhtiar Yaacob said the remand application for the four men, in their 20s, was made at the Taiping magistrates’ court today to assist in further investigations.
“They were remanded for seven days, starting today until next Friday,” he said.
Yesterday, police arrested the four to help in the investigations under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
On Wednesday, police received a report from a doctor on duty at Hospital Kuala Kangsar about the death of a 25-year-old man who was unconscious when brought in at 8.10pm.
The patient, who was brought in by an ustaz and three wardens from the rehabilitation centre, was then taken to the emergency ward for a Covid-19 test and an X-ray because there were wounds on his forehead and bruises on his face, left eye, chest, both legs and hands.
The victim had reportedly been talking to himself on Wednesday afternoon and tried to escape but was captured. One of the suspects alleged the victim later tried to injure one of them by using a knife and ran amok.
He said they managed to subdue the victim after a scuffle with a warden, who hit the victim’s body several times.
However, he added, at 4.45pm, the victim tried to escape again and jumped from the stairs of the first floor of the building, which is about 8m-high.
The suspect said that after being successfully recaptured, the victim’s legs and hands were tied and he was brought to the guest room.
He claimed the victim then hit his head on the floor and wall several times until he bled. A warden found the victim unconscious at 7.45pm and took him to hospital.
However, according to the post-mortem conducted by the hospital’s forensic unit, the cause of death was due to chest and musculoskeletal injuries caused by blunt trauma.
