PETALING JAYA:
The owners of the Crackhouse Comedy Club have been permanently blacklisted from registering a business licence for any premises in Kuala Lumpur.

Deputy federal territories minister Jalaluddin Alias said Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) licensing committee decided to revoke the comedy club’s licence effective July 30.

“The owners of the club has been permanently blacklisted, which means that he can no longer register any business in Kuala Lumpur even under different names and companies,” he told reporters after attending a joint operation at the Kuala Lumpur wholesale market today.

Jalaluddin said DBKL was also monitoring the activities of other clubs, and warned business owners to adhere to rules and regulations set by DBKL in their entertainment licences.

He said DBKL would conduct regular inspection of businesses.

“Those who do not adhere to the conditions set by DBKL will not get away. We will take action,” he said.

The blacklisting follows the suspension of the comedy club by DBKL early last month over a video clip that went viral.

The video clip showed a Malay woman removing her baju kurung to reveal a dress underneath during a standup comedy act in the club.

The woman and her boyfriend were eventually arrested and charged.

The club’s co-owner Rizal van Geyzel was also arrested when several old videos of controversial comedy performances resurfaced.

He was charged in the Kuala Lumpur sessions court with three counts of uploading videos on his three social media platforms that allegedly touched on racial and religious sensitivities.

He pleaded not guilty and was released on bail.
