Gan was best known for defeating DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang for the Bandar Hilir state seat in Melaka at the 6th general election in 1982, going on to retain the seat until 1994.
Such a political victory was a sweet moment for Gan, according to party president Wee Ka Siong, who remembered him as someone who had contributed immensely to Melaka.
In a Facebook post, Wee said that one of Gan’s key contributions to the state was the creation of Jonker Street, which is now a popular tourist spot that benefits the local economy.
“The passing of Gan Boon Leong is a huge loss to the party, the community and the country,” he said.
“His contributions and services will always be remembered. May his soul rest in peace.”
Gan was an influential political figure in the state, having served as a state executive councilor for three terms and Melaka MCA chairman for 12 years.
He also served as chairman of various NGOs.
Before joining politics, he was a bodybuilder who had won several national and global bodybuilding titles.
