Union demands apology from DG who verbally abused immigration officer

Immigration Services Union of Peninsular Malaysia president Khairil Niza Khairuddin says such behaviour by a senior government official is ‘appalling’.

A director-general allegedly yelled at an immigration officer and verbally abused him at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport this morning.
PETALING JAYA:
A union for immigration department staff has demanded a public apology from a director-general (DG) of a government department for shouting at an officer and verbally abusing him.

“The brazen disrespect by a senior government official towards a fellow civil servant was appalling,” Immigration Services Union of Peninsular Malaysia (KPISM) president Khairil Niza Khairuddin said.

The DG allegedly yelled at the immigration officer and verbally abused him in public at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) this morning.

FMT is withholding the DG’s name pending comment.

The incident allegedly occurred when the DG did not see an immigration officer stationed at the KLIA VIP room counter.

Khairil said immigration officers were usually not stationed at the VIP counter around the clock as they were also required to work at the general counters.

Khairil added that the DG’s attitude demonstrated a lack of leadership for someone in his position and stature.

“We demand that the DG make a public apology to the immigration officer and the department for his poor behaviour,” he said.

He also urged the government and Cuepacs to take appropriate action.

Separately, another union, Persatuan Penguasa Imigresen Malaysia said the incident involving the senior immigration officer would not dishearten the department in carrying out its duties.
