Nippon Sushi said it took note of public feedback and how the content depicted was unsuitable for a multiracial society, as well as for its corporate brand.
“We sincerely apologise and take full responsibility for our mistake and poor behaviour. We did not intend to make fun of any religion or race in the production of the video,” it said in a statement.
It said this was the company’s first time venturing into TikTok to promote its brand.
“Our excitement caused us to overlook the issues raised. We admit our weaknesses,” it said.
The company hoped that the influencer, known as “Ceo Batu”, would also apologise.
The one-minute three-second video was shot at a Nippon Sushi outlet, showing “Ceo Batu” mocking the Japanese language by stringing several popular brands into a sentence.
He had also taped the sides of his eyes so they looked slanted.
He was also seen struggling with chopsticks before throwing them aside and using his hands to eat sushi.
The video was posted on the company’s official social media accounts but had been taken down after receiving backlash from the public. The video can be viewed on Ceo Batu’s TikTok account which has garnered over 460,000 views.
