Amend anti-hopping bill to plug sacking ‘loophole’, says Loke

KUALA LUMPUR:
An opposition MP has called on the prime minister to amend the anti-hopping bill, which was tabled for a second reading this morning, to include a provision regarding parliamentarians who are sacked from the party.

Loke Siew Fook (PH-Seremban) said currently, MPs who were sacked would not lose their seats but the party itself would.

This, he said, was a “loophole”.

A party should have the right to sack its members without losing seats won on its ticket, Loke said.

“For example, if there is a DAP member who doesn’t support the party’s decision to back Port Dickson (Anwar Ibrahim) as the prime ministerial candidate and supports Bera (Ismail Sabri Yaakob) instead, the party should be able to sack him for going against its decision.

“But under the current bill, if the party sacks the member, he will continue to hold his seat without facing any consequences for violating the party’s decision,” he told the Dewan Rakyat when debating the anti-hopping bill.

Loke urged the prime minister to amend the bill to include MPs who were sacked by their parties.

He said such a loophole must be resolved to ensure a “foolproof” bill was passed and enacted.

The anti-hopping bill was earlier tabled in the Dewan Rakyat by Ismail and is currently being debated.
