PETALING JAYA:
An MP has urged the police to speed up investigations into the death of a man hours before his release from seven days’ jail for a drink-driving offence.

The family of Kim Shih Keat, 36, have called for an inquest to be held and for a joint investigation by the police, the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission and the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam).

Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh said it was important for the police to release the post-mortem report as the family could look into the possibility of an inquest.

Ramkarpal said he would ask the Johor prosecution director to look into the case, especially the post-mortem report, as the cause of death is still unknown.

Kim was sentenced to seven days’ jail on June 22 after he was arrested for driving under the influence in September last year. He was also fined RM15,000 and his driving licence was suspended.

His brother, Shih Hoe, said the family was told that Kim had died in hospital on June 28 after being found unconscious in Kluang prison hours before his release.

He said the family was informed of his death by a funeral home and not the prison.

His cousin Michelle said Kim had been in good physical health before he was sent to prison, and did not suffer from any illnesses.

Michelle alleged that the family found bruises on Kim’s body, all over his hands, chest, elbow and abdomen.

Kluang deputy police chief Abdul Razak Abdullah said police were investigating the matter. “Currently, the case is classified as sudden death, pending further investigation and a post-mortem investigation report,” he said.
