Sentul police chief Beh Eng Lai confirmed the matter, saying police recorded the Rantau assemblyman’s statement yesterday.
“Police recorded his statement yesterday and will refer the investigation paper to the deputy public prosecutor soon,” he told FMT.
Last week, Bersatu’s associate wing lodged a police report against Mohamad for allegedly making remarks deemed insensitive to the Hindu community.
Its information chief, S Gobi Krishnan, said he filed the report against the former Negeri Sembilan menteri besar as he had failed to apologise within 24 hours for his remarks.
In Mohamad’s recent interview with Asia Times, the Umno leader is said to have referred to the kavadi as a “burden” in describing Umno’s defeat at the 14th general election.
Gobi said the carrying of a kavadi was to fulfil vows a person had made and as a sign of gratitude to Lord Muruga during the annual Thaipusam festival.
He accused Mohamad, widely known as Tok Mat, of disrespecting the sensitivities of the Hindu community.
