PETALING JAYA:
Selangor Umno has criticised the PKR-led state government for roping in a private construction firm to refurbish the Shah Alam Stadium, accusing it of taking a hands-off approach to the matter.

The party’s state leader, Noh Omar, said the decision to appoint Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) was proof of the state government’s failure to manage the venue.

This is especially so since it has been in power for 14 years, he said, Utusan Malaysia reported.

“Whether or not they are tearing down the stadium or building a new one, handing it over to a private company proves that the state government cannot administer and this is a failure.

“And if it can’t manage a stadium, how are they to administer the country,” he was quoted as saying.

Noh said that as one who is from Selangor, he was disappointed that a private company was involved in the project. “I am dismayed with what has happened. How come other states can maintain their stadiums?”

Yesterday, the Selangor government said it appointed MRCB to refurbish the Shah Alam stadium and its surrounding sporting facilities for RM787 million. MRCB would fund the cost. In return, the company would be awarded a plot of land for development, said menteri besar Amirudin Shari.

Work would begin early next year for completion by 2026. The stadium, opened in 1994, was damaged by floods last year as well as in 2005 and 2015.
