PETALING JAYA:
Police tonight confirmed that they were probing a 39-year-old for sedition over two video clips taken from a comedy club that touch on racial sensitivities.

Police secretary Noorsiah Mohd Saaduddin said the suspect was nabbed in the Klang Valley.

Noorsiah said the suspect, who is being investigated by Bukit Aman’s D5 classified criminal investigation unit, was being probed over misuse of network facilities.

She said a remand application for the suspect would be made tomorrow, and the investigation paper would be submitted to the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) for further action.

Police did not identify the suspect.

Earlier today, it was reported that comedian Rizal van Geyzel had been arrested in connection with videos said to touch on racial and religious sensitivities.

Rizal’s lawyer, Ramkarpal Singh, had told FMT the Crackhouse Comedy Club co-founder would have to spend a night at the Dang Wangi lockup.

His arrest comes a day after two people were charged in court with insulting Islam and uploading insulting content on social media, following a controversial stand-up comedy routine.

Earlier today, Penang mufti Wan Salim Wan Mohd Noor called on the authorities to enforce guidelines to ensure comedy club owners and patrons did not cross moral and religious boundaries.

He said Islamic religious authorities, such as the Islamic development department (Jakim), should advise Muslims to preserve the purity of the religion and not make a joke out of it.
