Number of new Covid-19 cases up 30% to 21,355 last week

The number of new Covid-19 cases increased from 16,694 to 21,355 – or 27.9% – last week from the week before, says health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

In his update for the week ending July 9, Noor Hisham said the number of Covid-19 patients admitted to public hospitals and quarantine centres also increased.

The number of hospital admissions rose by 15% per population of 100,000 compared with the preceding week, he said.

Overall bed occupancy for non-critical beds remained unchanged while utilisation of intensive care unit (ICU) beds rose by 1%.

Active cases rose during the week by 11% to 32,145.

“Recoveries rose by 14.6% from 14,293 to 16,379,” he said.

“The number of deaths increased by 46.2% from 26 to 38, bringing the cumulative figure for fatalities to 35,809.”

Noor Hisham said 4,592,710 Covid-19 cases had been recorded in the country since January 2020.
