Kota Kinabalu district police chief Zaidi Abdullah said all the suspects, aged between 13 and 17, were arrested after the victim’s father lodged a report yesterday.
He said police had opened an investigation under Section 147 of the Penal Code, which covers rioting and carries a punishment of up to two years in jail or a fine, or both.
“The six female students, aged between 13 and 16, and the school-leaver, aged 17, are now assisting in the investigation,” he told FMT.
Zaidi said the authorities took the case seriously and would not show any leniency over any acts of bullying or violence involving students.
“The police would also like to advise the public against uploading or circulating videos that may cause concern in the community,” he said.
Yesterday, a video of the incident showing a group of students assaulting a schoolmate went viral on social media.
