Wangsa Maju district police chief Ashari Abu Samah said five suspects were arrested last night, with one of them being the owner of a travel agency.
“We arrested two men and three women. They include the owner of a travel agency, an agent and two employees,” he told FMT.
Yesterday, police were reported to have said that at least 22 reports were received from the affected pilgrims or their relatives over the case.
According to Ashari, police were currently recording the statements of the suspects and would then seek a remand order from the courts.
He said the case involved losses of about RM760,000.
The tourism, arts and culture ministry said yesterday that the affected pilgrims would have their fares refunded and their passports returned.
The prospective haj pilgrims were said to have been issued the furada or private haj visa to perform their pilgrimage without going through Lembaga Tabung Haji.
