Yasin, 47, was charged in March with trafficking in cannabis weighing about 214gm under Section 39B (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides for the death penalty.

He faces another charge of cultivating 17 cannabis plants under Section 6B(1)(a) of the same Act, which provides for life imprisonment and not less than six strokes of the rotan upon conviction.

Sinar Harian reported that Yasin expressed relief over the DNAA and thanked family members and friends for their support over the past few months.

His brother, Zain Sulaiman, 50, told reporters outside the courtroom the family was thankful for the court’s decision, although Yasin will not get to spend Hari Raya Haji with them.

“We are thankful for this new development in Yasin’s case. I hope that his friends and acquaintances will continue praying for him” he said.
