Azwan Jamaldin was accused of making several false claims amounting to RM63,704 for the maintenance and repair of vehicles belonging to the Malaysian police liaison officer (MPLO) in Pontianak, Indonesia.
The suit, in which Bukit Aman management director Ramli Din and former Malaysian consul in Pontianak Mohiuddin Ghazali were named as defendants, was filed at the Kuala Lumpur sessions court last week.
According to the writ of summons, Azwan alleged that Mohiuddin had “falsely and maliciously” written and published defamatory remarks about him in emails, between Dec 23, 2020 and March 8, 2021.
Mohiuddin had allegedly written an email to a Wisma Putra officer in August 2021 calling for a task force to investigate Azwan’s expenditure claims.
The task force subsequently confirmed that Azwan had falsified the claims.
Azwan also claimed that Ramli had written an alleged defamatory letter on March 23, 2021, based on Mohiuddin’s allegations and sent it to several top-ranking police officers.
They included former Special Branch director Mohamed Farid Abu Hassan, current Special Branch deputy director II Cheong Koon Kock, current Special Branch principal assistant director Aida Abdul Hamid, the inspector-general of police and the government.
He claimed that because of the allegations, his reputation as a policeman was severely tarnished and he was denied promotion.
Azwan is seeking damages from the defendants.
Azwan’s lawyer, M Manoharan, confirmed that he had filed the civil suit on behalf of his client at the Kuala Lumpur sessions court on May 23.
“The defendants had filed their appearance as defendants.
“During case management, the court had told Ramli to file his defence before June 15, while the case management involving Mohiuddin is on June 3,” he told FMT.
