PETALING JAYA:
A brake caliper hydraulic leakage on a LRT train caused the disruption of the Kelana Jaya LRT line yesterday.

This is the second incident that had occurred in less than two weeks involving a hydraulic leakage in the brake unit.

Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Amir Hamdan said about 22,100 passengers were affected in the incident, which took place around 4.36pm, near the Pasar Seni LRT station.

Amir said the operational control centre (OCC) was notified that there was a brake problem on the train and as a safety precaution, officials decided to remove it from service.

“When passing KL Sentral station, the brake system on Train 62 failed due to a hydraulic fluid leakage which caused the train to stop as it was no longer safe to drive manually,” he said at a press conference.

Amir added that the OCC had cut off the train’s power supply to enable engineers and technicians to carry out inspection work.

He said a free shuttle bus service between Bangsar LRT station, KL Sentral LRT station and Pasar Seni LRT station was provided to passengers, adding that train services were fully restored by 6.36pm after the train was successfully diverted to a pocket track.

Kelana Jaya LRT line rail engineering head Leman Zakaria explained that Train 62 is an 818 Innovia Mark II train model produced by Bombadier.

Leman said the replacement and overhaul of the brake system for this train model has been carried out progressively since October last year, adding that the upgrades have reached 39%.

“They are expected to be fully completed by Nov 30,” he said.

Rapid Rail also announced that commuters affected by the incident yesterday can get one-way travel coupons that need to be redeemed within five days from today.

Yesterday’s incident left commuters fuming over their delayed journey home with many netizens taking to social media to express their frustrations.
