Party president Shafie Apdal said Sabah’s political history had shown that a single multiracial party could achieve victory in an election and form the state government even if it had no alliances.
“A political alliance will not necessarily win seats in an election. In fact, previously, multiracial parties like Berjaya (Parti Bersatu Rakyat Jelata Sabah) and PBS (Parti Bersatu Sabah) had won in Sabah while standing alone,” he said at a press conference at the Warisan headquarters here today.
Shafie, however, acknowledged that political alliances could make things easier.
“We haven’t decided (if Warisan will go solo in GE15) yet, but political alliances or cooperations are also important. So we will see.”
He admitted that Warisan had yet to hold more recent serious discussions with parties or coalitions on political cooperation for GE15, but added that the party would focus on its “internal matters” first.
“We were in talks with Muda previously, but that cooperation did not come to fruition in the Johor elections. We’re open to speaking to them again but right now, I’ve told Syed Saddiq (Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman) that we’ll get our own house in order and he should do the same with his,” he said.
Shafie, who is the Semporna MP, also announced that Warisan had yet to decide whether it would be contesting for peninsular seats in GE15.
He said that while the party did not perform well in the recent Johor elections, this did not mean that it was completely rejected in the peninsula.
“Johor wasn’t easy but that doesn’t mean that all of West Malaysia has rejected us. We had support in Pasir Gudang and we even have support in Kedah,” he said.
“There are 222 parliamentary seats, 25 of which are in Sabah. We have constantly been calling for there to be more seats in Sabah but our calls have been ignored by PAS and Umno.
“In fact, there are even Sabah leaders who have rejected these calls as they would rather follow their parties than the wishes of the Sabahans,” he said.
