Rafizi to donate RM70,000 awarded in NFCorp case to charity

KUALA LUMPUR:
PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli said he will donate the RM70,000 awarded by the Federal Court in the National Feedlot Corp (NFCorp) defamation case against him to charity through scholarship and small assistance.

“Today, the Federal Court ruled in my favour in NFC’s defamation suit against me. I broke the NFC scandal in 2011 that brought three legal cases against me. I won all three,” the former Pandan MP said in a Twitter post.

“The sum awarded to me will be returned to the public as scholarships and small assistance.”

The sum was awarded after the apex court quashed the appeal by NFCorp and its chairman, Salleh Ismail, against the dismissal of their defamation suit against Rafizi over alleged misuse of government funds.

Chief Judge of Malaya Azahar Mohamed, who chaired a three-member bench, said Rafizi had successfully raised the defence of fair comment to defeat the suit.

Salleh filed the defamation suit against Rafizi in 2013 after the then MP alleged that he and NFCorp had used a RM71 million government loan as collateral to buy properties at KL Eco City.

In 2016, the High Court ordered Rafizi to pay RM150,000 in damages after holding him liable for defaming Salleh.

The Court of Appeal, however, granted Rafizi’s appeal and set aside the lower court’s ruling. It ordered the RM150,000 that was paid to Salleh to be refunded and also awarded costs of RM110,000 to Rafizi.
