Zahid’s lawyers to lodge police report over leaked PAS documents

Lead counsel Hisyam Teh Poh Teik says a reference to 'hasten sentencing' is obviously linked to the Umno president's court case.

The lead lawyer in Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s corruption case says the allegations in the leaked PAS documents can compromise the integrity of the judiciary.
PETALING JAYA:
The legal team representing Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in his corruption trial will lodge a police report over leaked documents from PAS that allegedly mention the need for “interference” in court cases involving certain Umno leaders to “hasten their sentencing”.

This was among the claims in the leaked documents allegedly containing a plot to topple Umno leaders and disrupt the party.

The Umno president’s lead counsel, Hisyam Teh Poh Teik, said they want the authorities to investigate the matter to determine whether attempts had been made to compromise the integrity of the judicial process.

“The legal team representing Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is both shocked and troubled by the expose on social media over the leaked documents,” he said in a statement.

He said the leaked documents, titled “Laporan political engagement PAS pusat” (Political engagement report of PAS’ central leadership), contained, among others, a reference to “an urgent need to interfere in the court cases to hasten sentencing”.

In this context, he said, it obviously referred to Zahid’s court case.

The leaked documents are believed to be minutes of a PAS meeting which allegedly mentioned a plot to topple and disrupt Umno and Barisan Nasional.

In a response earlier, PAS vice-president Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar denied the existence of such a plot.

Apart from Samsuri, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan and Bersatu leaders Azmin Ali and Hamzah Zainudin have also been linked to the plot.

Earlier, Umno Supreme Council member Ahmad Shabery Cheek called on PAS leaders to clarify the leaked documents.

He said that since the documents involved the leadership of a party that was part of the current federal government, it was crucial that an immediate denial be issued if the contents were untrue.

According to the documents, there is also a plan to expedite the cases involving Umno’s “court cluster”, namely Zahid and former prime minister Najib Razak, who are either on trial or have been convicted on charges such as criminal breach of trust, abuse of power and money laundering.
