“We see this as nothing more than a pathetic attempt to slander PAS, and to damage the relationship and camaraderie between the two parties by an irresponsible individual,” PAS central committee member Awang Hashim told FMT.
“I would like to deny the authenticity of the documents. And I would also like to clarify once and for all that there is no such plot taking place. It’s an outright fake and wild allegation.”
The leaked documents are believed to be minutes of a PAS meeting, which include a plan to expedite the sentences of Umno leaders who are either on trial or have been convicted on charges such as criminal breach of trust, abuse of power and money laundering.
Several prominent figures have been linked to the alleged plot, including Terengganu menteri besar and PAS vice-president Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan and Bersatu leaders Azmin Ali and Hamzah Zainudin.
Samsuri has denied that there was a plot to topple Umno leaders, saying the leaked documents were “rubbish”, when asked by reporters.
He said he did not know where such documents even came from.
“Do people believe ‘rubbish’ documents like that?” he asked, based on a Facebook live video posted by Terengganu PAS.
Before that, Umno Supreme Council member Ahmad Shabery Cheek had called on PAS leaders to clarify the leaked documents.
He said that since the documents involved the leadership of a party that was part of the current federal government, it was crucial that an immediate denial be issued if the contents were untrue.
